Dozens of Students at SMKN 1 Sine, Ngawi Hospitalized After Suspected Free Meal Poisoning

Ngawi, East Java - October 1, 2025 - Dozens of students from SMKN 1 Sine in Ngawi Regency were rushed to local health facilities on Wednesday after showing symptoms of suspected food poisoning linked to the school’s Free Nutritional Meal program, officials confirmed. (detikcom)

The incident began after students consumed meals provided by the Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, around lunchtime. According to school authorities, MBG had delivered approximately 1,000 food packages to the school’s 1,300 students. (ANTARA News)

Early the next morning, students began reporting nausea, dizziness, vomiting, weakness, and difficulty breathing during school hours, prompting teachers to alert health workers. By midday, about 35 to 45 students had developed similar symptoms and were transported to Puskesmas Sine and nearby clinics for medical treatment, according to local police and school officials.

“We initially recorded one student feeling unwell, but the number kept rising quickly,” said AKP Sugeng Wahyudi, Police Sector Head of Sine. He added that authorities could not yet confirm whether the illness was due to food poisoning or another cause.

School Deputy Head Agus Setyo Budi told reporters that students who fell ill complained of abdominal pain, vomiting, and fatigue. Some were treated at Puskesmas Ngrambe and Aisyah Hospital, while others were discharged to continue care at home.

The MBG menu served the day before reportedly included rice with chicken and vegetables, but investigators are awaiting laboratory results to determine if contamination occurred. Samples of the meal have been sent for testing, said officials from the Ngawi Health Office.

Local authorities temporarily suspended the MBG program at the school as they continue their investigation. Parents gathered at the health facilities to check on their children’s conditions, but by Thursday most had shown signs of recovery and were released.
