Cahaya Trans Bus Crash on Semarang Toll Road Leaves 16 Dead

Semarang, Central Java—December 22, 2025 — A tragic bus crash on the Krapyak Toll exit in Semarang early Monday morning has killed 16 passengers and injured dozens more, police and emergency officials reported, prompting an ongoing investigation into the causes of the deadly accident.

The crash occurred at approximately 00:30 WIB on Monday, December 22, when a Cahaya Trans bus carrying around 34 passengers was traveling from Jatiasih, Bekasi, toward Yogyakarta along the Jakarta–Semarang Toll Road. According to preliminary information from local authorities, the bus lost control while navigating a curve near the exit ramp, struck the road barrier, and then overturned on its side. Emergency response teams, including police, Basarnas, medical personnel, and toll road workers, quickly arrived at the scene to assist in the evacuation of victims. Of the total passengers onboard, 16 were confirmed dead either at the scene or shortly after being taken to nearby hospitals in Semarang. Dozens of other passengers sustained various injuries and were treated in several medical facilities, according to detikJateng reporting. Authorities have established a joint identification post, and all deceased victims have since been formally identified by forensic teams.

Initial investigations by the Central Java Police Traffic Unit and transportation safety officials indicate that the bus may have been traveling at high speed when the driver lost control on the curved section of the toll road. Police also confirmed that the driver at the time of the accident was a replacement or backup driver, not the route’s primary driver. Authorities are examining whether driver fatigue, speed, vehicle condition, or other factors contributed to the loss of control.

Further scrutiny has revealed that the bus involved was declared not roadworthy during a safety check conducted in early December and was technically not fit for operation under national transport regulations, officials from the Ministry of Transportation confirmed. This finding has intensified calls for stricter enforcement of safety standards for public transport vehicles.

Local lawmakers and transport safety advocates have urged a thorough and transparent investigation into the crash to establish responsibility and prevent similar tragedies, particularly during the busy holiday travel period. Victims’ families are receiving support, and compensation arrangements are being coordinated through the national insurance agency.
