Bandung, West Java, January 24, 2026: Police in Bandung arrested a man accused of shooting an elderly gold seller and carrying out a sophisticated gold fraud scheme that targeted multiple victims in the Sukajadi area, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
The suspect, identified by police only as MR (35), was apprehended following an intensive investigation by the Bandung City Police (Polrestabes Bandung). He is accused of shooting a 71-year-old gold seller, identified as MRM, during a robbery attempt at the victim’s shop in Sukajadi District last month. According to the official statement from Polrestabes Bandung, the incident occurred when the suspect visited the elderly man’s shop under the pretense of purchasing gold. During the interaction, the suspect reportedly pulled out a firearm, fired at the victim, and attempted to seize valuable items before fleeing. The victim survived the attack and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Investigators later confirmed that the suspect had been using variations of the same method to perpetrate fraudulent gold transactions against other sellers in the area prior to the shooting. The Bandung Police Criminal Investigation Unit said they tracked the suspect through surveillance footage and witness accounts, enabling them to narrow down his route of escape and eventual location. Officers coordinated with local units to detain him without further incident. The police also recovered evidence believed to be tied to both the shooting and the fraud operations, including several tools used in the illegal transactions.
Polrestabes Bandung Chief of Police, Kombes Pol Nugroho, said the arrest was a result of “rapid and firm action” to protect public safety and reassure the community. He emphasized that the suspect would face multiple charges, including attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm, and fraud. Investigators are preparing the case for prosecution at the Bandung District Court.
Local residents expressed relief after hearing the news of the arrest, as the shooting incident had sparked concern, particularly among small business owners in Sukajadi. Many said they had been cautious since the attack, fearing similar crimes could occur in the bustling commercial neighborhood.
Police urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, especially involving transactions involving high-value items such as gold.
